DINING SPOTS

with an English Menu or English-Speaking Staff

Our Favourite Neapolitan Pizza in Town

Craving something beyond dashi and soy sauce during your time in Japan? Salina, a centrally located pizzeria, might be just what you need. Run by a chef trained in Naples, this is the only restaurant in Ishikawa Prefecture that is certified by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, serving truly authentic Neapolitan pizza.
Our top pick is the Pizza Margherita. Enjoying it in their cozy restaurant overlooking the serene Seseragi-dori Street is such a treat. It’s no wonder why some travellers
have even dined there three nights in a row! Don’t forget to try their à la carte dishes and house-made gelatos, too.

The Captivating World of Japanese Broth

Dashi (Japanese broth) is inseparable from Japanese cuisine. Have you had the chance to enjoy dashi during your time in Japan? If not, then it’s time to dive into ‘barrier’, a restaurant that offers a contemporary take on this traditional culinary element. The white interior on the ground floor contrasts beautifully with the dimly lit, atmospheric space upstairs.
Here, you’ll enjoy a unique six-course experience that explores the wonders of dashi. Whether it’s vegetables, fish, meat, or ramen, each dish is elevated by dashi poured from a siphon,
which unlocks complex, layered flavours. It’s so good that we never leave a single drop.

Course Meals: A, B, C, D, plus two vegan options, ¥4,800–¥9,900
Each meal includes three side dishes, pressed sushi, ramen noodles, and dessert.

A Laid-Back Sushi Counter with a Local Vibe

As you flip up the noren curtains at the entrance, a cheerful okamisan (female proprietor) greets you with a warm smile, and you can’t help but smile back.
Not sure what to order? Start with the eight-piece nigiri assortment. Then choose from the daily fish selection on the menu or in the display case, just like the locals do. Try some regional clams, such as Baigai and Shirogai, with a wonderfully firm, crunchy texture. While sushi is typically paired with sake,
it’s hard to resist a beer, highball, or some umeshu (Japanese plum wine). It can get busy early, so we suggest visiting after 7 pm.

Kanazawa Sushi That Lingers in the Heart

Located at the entrance to Kazue-machi Chaya District, Sushi Asanogawa sits within a beautifully preserved former geiko (Kanazawa’s term for geisha) teahouse. Kazue-machi Chaya District is a compact, tranquil geiko district along the Asanogawa River, which is often called the “female river” for its gentle, graceful flow.
As you stand before the restaurant, flip up the noren curtain, and slide open the latticed door, you can’t help but feel your heart beat a little faster with anticipation.
We highly recommend sitting at the elegant wooden counter, where you can watch the chef’s precise, captivating movements, which are so mesmerising that you’ll lose track of time. Both their lunch and dinner sushi courses are simply beyond words,
and the breathtaking beauty of each piece is sure to stay with you long after your meal is over.

Crunchy, Crispy, Irresistible Tonkatsu

Did you know that in Japan, “katsu” is usually called tonkatsu, meaning a deep-fried pork cutlet—not chicken? At Kanazawa Katsuzo, located inside Kanazawa Station, we fell in love at first bite with their fresh, deep-fried tonkatsu made from Ishikawa’s signature Noto Pork. It’s crispy, crunchy, and full of flavour. When you hear katsu, you might think of katsu curry, but let us share our favourite ways to enjoy the tonkatsu at Kanazawa Katsuzo. You can’t go wrong with a sprinkle of Noto salt, which brings out the natural umami of the tender pork.
Our all-time favourite, though, is their signature katsudon, available only at this location: a rice bowl topped with a juicy cutlet, simmered
with egg and a sweet, savoury dashi sauce. They also serve deep-fried prawns and mackerel, so why not try a few different dishes and find your favourite?

Eat Like a Local: Meet Me at an Izakaya

Want to sample a wide range of Japanese dishes like the locals do? Head to an izakaya—a casual Japanese pub where people gather to drink, socialise, and enjoy great food in a relaxed setting.
From traditional to modern fusion, Daian has it all. Tempura? ✔️ Sashimi? ✔️ Yakitori? ✔️
You can sit at standard tables and chairs, but if you’re looking for a more authentic experience, opt for a horigotatsu. It’s a low table that allows you to sit on the floor, with a sunken space beneath for your legs—perfect for relaxing while dining the Japanese way.
An izakaya is all about sharing. Share plates with family or friends, try a bit of everything,
and soak in the lively, welcoming vibe. Honestly, we can’t say enough about how much we love izakaya culture!

Experience Japanese Kissaten Culture

Do you know what kissaten is? These retro Japanese tearooms/coffee shops first appeared in the late 1800s and became popular throughout the early 1900s. Japanese people love kissaten for the sense of nostalgia they evoke, and even younger generations visit them to enjoy a retro atmosphere once made popular by Western-inspired menu items.
Located in a 100-year-old traditional townhouse near the Nishi Chaya District, KISSA ISSAKA offers a nostalgic kissaten experience by day and transforms into a pub by night. We recommend trying a Japanese-style Western breakfast paired with a cup of coffee, often called a “morning set.” You can also stop by for lunch or a light snack to enjoy
classic kissaten favourites, such as Spaghetti Neapolitan, custard flan (pudding à la mode), cream soda topped with ice cream, and more.

This Japanese-style spaghetti stir-fried with tomato ketchup is an iconic, must-try dish on a kissaten menu.

Even Bagels Get a Local Japanese Twist

If you haven’t tried Japanese-style bagels, then don’t leave Japan just yet!
Stop by Tobagel, located near Omicho Market, and prepare to be amazed by their incredible selection, including seasonal specials. This cute, cozy shop is the perfect spot to grab a takeaway lunch, an afternoon snack, or breakfast for the next morning.
While their signature sweet potato-filled bagels (Kin-no-Sweet Potato and Gin-no-Sweet Potato) never fail to satisfy, we can’t resist their “tastiest egg sandwich in Japan”, either. It’s only available in limited q
uantities, so make sure to visit early! You’ll become a fan of their fluffy, chewy dough the moment you take your first bite.

Yoshoku: Our Beloved Japanese Food

The Western-influenced Japanese cuisine known as Yoshoku has been a beloved part of Japan’s culinary culture for over a century. Just hearing the word makes our mouths water. Jiyuken, located at the entrance to the Higashi Chaya District, is a long-time local favourite, beloved by residents and geiko (Kanazawa’s term for geisha) alike.
This restaurant is best known for its soy sauce–flavoured omurice, but we especially love their Japanese katsu curry. The menu is full of tempting options: daily set meals, fluffy egg sandwiches,
and Japanese-style spaghetti, to name a few. You might have to queue up to get a table, but it’s definitely worth it.

The Ideal Coffee Break Spot to Unwind

Kanazawaya Coffee Shop is our go-to recommendation for a blissful coffee moment! It is perfectly located right next to the Kuromon Gate of Kanazawa Castle.
It’s hard to resist stepping inside when the rich aroma of freshly roasted beans greets you as you pass by.
Sit on the terrace or upstairs, where you can enjoy views of the historic moat and stone walls—a truly Kanazawa experience. We especially love the
café latte paired with a brioche or a matcha Swiss roll topped with sweet red ogura beans—we just can’t get enough!
