Okinawa’s kanhi-zakura (Taiwan cherry) starts off the blooming season in January, followed by yamazakura (hill cherry) which blooms around March. Usually at the beginning of April, Somei-Yoshino fully blooms, and the middle of the month is the best time to view yae-zakura (double-flowered cherry). Oshima-zakura, with five white petals, is well-known for its flowers and leaves coming into bloom all at once. On the other hand, Edo-higan-zakura blooms around the equinoctial week in March as the name implies. Yes, there are many kinds of sakura! This tree is mutable and also is colorbreeded to many. It’s said that about 100 wild or mountain sakura and 300 cultivated ones have been created from 10 original sakura trees. This tree forms its buds in summer and then goes into dormancy during winter. This provides the low temperatures which are key to beautiful blossoms in the spring.
Did you know that 80% of Japan’s sakura tree stock is “Somei-Yoshino” which was created in Somei village in Tokyo during the Edo period? It’s a mixture of Oshima-zakura and Edo-higan-zakura, called “Yoshino-zakura at first. It was named after the place that is the most famous sakura location in Nara prefecture.
